White Elephant Gifts Under $25 That People Actually Fight Over

Six gifts for an office swap or a family exchange: three games that get a room playing on the spot, a skillet that outlasts the party, a hot sauce for the cook and a notebook for the list-maker.

The gift that wins a white elephant swap is the one people want to take from someone else, and it's rarely the funniest thing in the pile. Joke gifts get a laugh when they're opened and then sit unclaimed. What gets fought over is something useful that looks like more than it cost, or something the whole room can use right now.

That's why half of this list is games. A card game opened at the party gets played at the party, which makes it the one gift everybody tries. The other half is things a grown-up will keep: a cast iron skillet, a bottle of good hot sauce, a pocket notebook that doesn't run out of pages.

Every pick lists at or under $25 on its maker's own store, so it fits the most common swap limit with no math. We checked each maker's page on October 19 and give their list price, not a sale price.

Taco vs Burrito is the gift to bring when you don't know who'll unwrap it. A seven-year-old made it up, and the maker pitches it for ages 7 to 107, which is about right: you build a meal out of food cards and throw action cards at everyone else's, so the rules fit on one breath and the arguing starts on the second turn.

It takes a few minutes to learn and a round runs 10 to 15 minutes, short enough to play while the swap is still going. That matters more than it sounds. A game that needs a rulebook read aloud stays in its box; this one comes out before dessert.

The catch is the player count. The base game is built for two to four, so at a party it becomes a side table game rather than something the whole room joins. If the swap is mostly adults who play games, Exploding Kittens below holds up better over a second and third round.

Good

  • Rules are short enough for kids and grandparents at once
  • A round takes 10 to 15 minutes
  • Food-fight theme reads as funny before anyone plays

Worth knowing

  • Two to four players, so it won't hold a whole party
  • Lists just under the budget, with nothing to spare

Exploding Kittens is a card game of chicken. Everyone draws from the same deck, and whoever draws an exploding kitten is out unless they hold a card to defuse it. The rest of the deck is cards for skipping your turn, peeking at what's coming and making someone else draw, so every turn is a small gamble the whole table watches.

The anniversary edition is the version to give. It's the original 56-card game plus eight bonus cards, packed in a metal tin instead of a cardboard box, and the tin is what makes it look like a present rather than a game grabbed on the way over. Two to five play, ages 7 and up, and a game runs about 15 minutes.

It's the pick most likely to already be in someone's house, which is the honest downside: in a group of regular game players, ask around first. For a group that has never played, it's the easiest yes on this list.

Good

  • Comes in a metal tin that looks like a gift
  • Eight bonus cards beyond the original deck
  • About 15 minutes a game, and about five to learn

Worth knowing

  • The most likely gift here to be a duplicate
  • Five players at most

Happy Salmon is the only gift here the entire party can play at once. Up to eight people each hold a stack of cards, and every card is an action you do with a partner: a high five, a fist bump, swapping places, the slap of a happy salmon. Everyone shouts their card at the same time looking for a match, and the first to empty their stack wins.

A round lasts about 90 seconds, so it fits the gap between gift openings, and nobody has to sit out to learn it. It's from the same maker as Exploding Kittens, with 98 action cards in a box small enough for a coat pocket.

At under $15 it also solves the awkward budget. Pair it with a bag of good coffee or chocolate and you're at the limit with a gift that gets used that night. The catch: it's loud and physical, so it suits a family party better than a quiet office lunch.

Good

  • Three to eight people play at once
  • A round is about 90 seconds
  • Leaves room in a $25 budget to add something

Worth knowing

  • Loud and physical: wrong for a quiet office swap
  • Needs at least three players

This is the grown-up pick, and the one most likely to still be in use in ten years. It's a regular Lodge 8 inch skillet, made in the USA and seasoned with vegetable oil at the foundry so it can cook an egg the day it's unwrapped, with one difference: a scene of ducks in flight cast into the cooking surface. That detail is what makes it a gift instead of a kitchen errand.

An 8 inch pan is the size for two eggs, a grilled cheese or a small batch of cornbread. Lodge lists a cooking surface of about 7.9 by 8.3 inches and a weight of 3.5 pounds, so it's solid without being a chore to lift. It works on any stovetop, induction included, and in the oven, on a grill or over a campfire.

Two things to know. It weighs more than anything else in the pile, so it'll be the heavy box everyone shakes. And cast iron wants hand washing and a light coat of oil after each use; for someone who has never owned it, that's a small new habit.

Good

  • Made in the USA and seasoned, ready to cook
  • Works on induction, in the oven, on a grill or a campfire
  • The duck scene makes a basic pan look like a gift

Worth knowing

  • Hand wash and oil it: no dishwasher
  • At 3.5 lb, the heaviest box in the pile

Hot sauce is a white elephant classic because nearly everyone eats it and almost nobody buys the expensive bottle for themselves. TRUFF is that bottle. It's red chili peppers blended with black truffle, agave nectar and olive oil infused with black truffle, and it comes in a faceted black bottle with a cap shaped like a truffle, so it looks considered before anyone tastes it.

TRUFF calls the heat medium, mild to medium in its own words, and the flavor is more savory than fiery. That's the right call for a swap: a sauce that's too hot is a dare, and a dare goes home with no one. This one goes on eggs, pizza and tacos. The maker lists it as vegan and gluten free.

The catch is taste. Truffle is love-or-hate, and someone who dislikes it will dislike this. And at under $20 for a bottle, it's a gift that's gone in a month, where the skillet or the notebook stays.

Good

  • A bottle most people won't buy for themselves
  • Medium heat, so it isn't a dare
  • Vegan and gluten free, per the maker

Worth knowing

  • Truffle flavor divides people
  • Used up in weeks, not years

The Rocketbook Mini is a pocket notepad you never finish. Write on its 48 dot-grid pages with the Pilot FriXion pen in the box, scan a page with the free Rocketbook app to send it to Google Drive, Dropbox or OneNote, then wipe the page clean with a damp cloth and start again. A microfiber towel comes with it.

At 3.5 by 5.5 inches, it fits a back pocket or a coat, and the spiral is on top, so it flips like a reporter's pad and works for either hand. The new version has a scratch-resistant, waterproof cover. It suits anyone who lives by lists: grocery runs, a to-do for the day, a phone number caught mid-conversation.

The catch is the pen. Only erasable FriXion ink wipes off, so a borrowed ballpoint leaves a page that won't come clean. Tell whoever picks it to keep the pen with it.

Good

  • 48 pages that wipe clean, so it never runs out
  • Pen and cloth in the box
  • Scans pages to Google Drive, Dropbox or OneNote

Worth knowing

  • Only FriXion pens wipe off; regular ink stays
  • Small pages: lists and notes, not long writing

How we chose

Three rules. Every gift lists at or under $25 on its maker's own store, at the list price rather than a sale. Every gift is something an adult would keep or use, so no novelty that gets a laugh and ends up in a drawer. And every gift works for someone you don't know, which rules out clothes, anything with a size, and anything that needs an app account to do its main job.

We chose from the makers' published specifications and descriptions. We haven't held or used these products: everything here comes from what their makers publish.

If you need two gifts at the same budget

Happy Salmon lists under $15, which leaves room under $25 for a second, smaller thing. A few pairings that keep the theme:

  • Happy Salmon with a deck of regular playing cards, as a game-night kit
  • The Lodge skillet on its own: at its list price it already uses the budget
  • TRUFF with a bag of tortilla chips, so it can be opened on the spot

If your group's limit is lower, Happy Salmon is the one gift here under $15 on its own.

What we left out, and why

LEGO's small Botanicals sets would fit this list, but LEGO's product pages blocked us, and we don't write about a product without reading its maker's page. Stanley's travel mugs and flasks list right at or just over that line at full price, so they don't come in under $25. Several clever novelty gifts from Kikkerland and Genuine Fred, a keychain arcade console and a hot dog incense holder among them, had no Amazon listing we could match exactly, and we only link the exact product. Gift cards are left out on purpose: in a swap, they're the gift nobody fights over.

Questions people ask

What's a good spending limit for a white elephant gift exchange?

Twenty to twenty-five dollars is the most common limit for an office or family swap, which is why every gift here lists under $25. A lower limit, under $15, works for a big group; Happy Salmon is the pick from this list that fits it.

Are games good white elephant gifts?

They're among the best, because a game opened at the party can be played at the party. Pick one with short rules and quick rounds: Taco vs Burrito and Exploding Kittens take about five minutes to learn, and a Happy Salmon round lasts 90 seconds.

What should you avoid bringing to a white elephant swap?

Anything with a size, anything perishable that needs a fridge, and joke gifts that only work once. Gift cards also tend to sit unclaimed. Something useful that looks like more than it cost does best.
