The Virtuoso Plus (BB-PDC20) bakes a horizontal, traditional-shaped 2-lb loaf instead of the tall loaf many machines make. Two kneading blades and an extra heater in the lid help the dough mix evenly and the top crust brown. It has 15 menu settings, including gluten free, salt free, sugar free, vegan, sourdough starter, dough, cake and jam, plus three homemade settings where you set the knead, rise and bake times yourself. A 13-hour delay timer lets you wake up to a finished loaf.

It suits someone who bakes often and wants control over each stage. If you bake now and then, a simpler single-blade machine may be all you need.

Worth knowing It makes only 2-lb loaves and takes up a fair amount of counter space. The nonstick baking pan is a separate part to replace, so it is worth looking after.
