Ask a man what he wants for Christmas and the answer is usually some version of "nothing, I'm good." What he tends to mean is that he won't go out and buy these things for himself: a decent multi-tool, a thermometer that ends the guessing at the grill, a hand grinder for his coffee, a tracker for the keys he keeps losing. Put one in his hands and it gets used every week. Those are the gifts on this list.
All 25 are at or under $50 at the maker's list price, and each is something he'll still be using long after December. They're grouped by the kind of guy you're shopping for: the one who fixes everything, the one at the grill, the coffee drinker, the camper, the tech guy, the gamer and the one who's never home. Every gift comes with its catch, because every one has one, and several need something extra in the box (a fuel canister, batteries, a key ring holder, a memory card). They're all listed under "Put these in the box too" below.
We picked them from our other gift guides, which are built from each maker's product page, spec sheet and manual. We haven't used these products; we read what the makers publish and wrote down what the box doesn't tell you. This list goes with our video of the same 25 gifts, in the same order.

Leatherman Wingman Multi-Tool
- Tools
- 14
- Weight
- 7 oz
- Closed length
- 3.8 in
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
The Wingman is the multi-tool to give a guy who doesn't own one, and a good upgrade for one who carries a cheap one. It has 14 tools in a 3.8-inch stainless steel body: needlenose and regular pliers, wire cutters and a stripper, a 2.6-inch combination knife, scissors, a package opener, a can and bottle opener, a wood and metal file, a small ruler and three screwdrivers.
Two details make it nicer to use than its price suggests. The pliers and scissors are spring-loaded, so they open on their own after each squeeze, which is what makes cutting zip ties or wire less tiring. And the knife, scissors and package opener sit on the outside, so the most common jobs don't mean unfolding the whole tool. Leatherman builds it at its Portland, Oregon factory, with some parts sourced abroad.
The catches: at 7 ounces it's a real weight in a pocket, and it comes with a pocket clip but no sheath, which Leatherman sells separately. It also has a knife blade, so it belongs on a belt or in the truck, not in a carry-on bag.
Good
- Spring-action pliers and scissors
- Knife, scissors and box opener reachable from outside
- Made at Leatherman's Portland, Oregon factory
Worth knowing
- No sheath in the box
- 7 oz is heavy for a front pocket
- Has a blade: not for a carry-on bag

2For his keyring
Gerber Shard Keychain Tool
- Tools
- 7
- Weight
- 1.0 oz
- Blade
- None
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
The Shard is a flat piece of stainless steel with seven jobs cut into it: a pry bar, a small and a large flat screwdriver, a cross driver for Phillips screws, a wire stripper, a bottle opener and a hole for the keyring. It weighs one ounce, and Gerber gives it a titanium nitride coating against corrosion.
It's the gift for the person who is always asking for a screwdriver. A loose screw on a cabinet hinge, a battery door on a toy, a paint can lid, a stubborn bottle cap: the Shard handles the small, annoying jobs that otherwise mean a trip to the garage. Because there's no blade, it doesn't raise the questions a pocketknife does.
Keep expectations in proportion. A drive tip on a one-ounce keyring tool gives you little leverage, so it loosens a tight screw less easily than a real screwdriver would, and its edges are angular in a pocket. As a backup that's always there, it's hard to beat at under $10.
Good
- Seven tools, no blade
- One ounce on a keyring
- Coated against corrosion
Worth knowing
- Little leverage on tight screws
- Angular edges in a pocket

3For the guy who just moved
Black+Decker 4V MAX Cordless Screwdriver with Picture-Hanging Kit (BDCS40BI)
- Voltage
- 4V MAX
- Weight
- 1.5 lb
- Charger
- USB
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
A cordless screwdriver is the tool a new homeowner uses most and thinks to buy least. This Black+Decker kit pairs a small 4-volt screwdriver with a picture-hanging kit and a set of bits, which covers the two jobs that fill the first weekends in a new place: putting up frames and mirrors, and putting together furniture that arrived in flat boxes.
The handle pivots, so it works as a straight driver in a cramped cabinet or as a pistol grip on an open wall. There's an LED to light the screw you're aiming at, a magnetic holder that keeps a spare bit on the tool and a battery indicator so it's never flat by surprise. It charges over USB, so there's no special charger to lose in a move, and weighs 1.5 pounds.
Know its limits. A 4-volt screwdriver drives screws; it doesn't drill holes in brick, tile or hardwood, which needs a proper drill. And for a homeowner who already owns a drill-driver, a screwdriver this small is a convenience, not a new ability. For a first apartment or a first house, it's the right first tool.
Good
- Picture-hanging kit and bits in the box
- Pivoting handle for tight spaces
- Charges over USB, with a battery indicator
Worth knowing
- Drives screws; doesn't drill masonry or tile
- Redundant for someone who owns a drill-driver
All specs

- BatteryLithium-ion, 1.5 Ah

4For work under the sink
BioLite Range 300 Headlamp, Midnight Grey
- Brightness
- 300 lumens
- Beam
- 75 m
- Fast charge
- 8 min = 1 hr on high
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
A headlamp is the flashlight a guy didn't know he wanted until he's under a sink, in an attic or changing a tire after dark with both hands busy. BioLite's Range 300 is a slim, low-profile one: 300 lumens, enough for working at arm's length or walking a trail, with a beam BioLite rates at 75 meters.
What sets it apart at this price is the charging. It charges over USB-C, the same cable as most new phones, and BioLite says eight minutes on the charger adds an hour of light on high. That matters for a light that lives in a junk drawer: when it's dead, it's back in use in minutes rather than overnight. It's rated IP67, which means it's sealed against dust and can be dropped in water.
The Range 300 is BioLite's newest line, and its page is thin on numbers: it doesn't list the weight or how long a full charge lasts on low. For a brighter, longer-throwing light, BioLite makes the Range 400 and 500 above it, at prices over this guide's budget.
Good
- Charges over USB-C, quickly: 8 minutes for an hour on high
- IP67: dustproof and survives a dunk
- Slim lamp, sits flat on the forehead
Worth knowing
- BioLite doesn't publish its weight or low-mode runtime
- 300 lumens is plenty for chores, not the brightest

5For the garage and the breaker box
Brother P-touch PT-D220 Home and Office Everyday Label Maker
- Max label width
- About 1/2 in (12 mm)
- Display
- 15 characters, 1 line
- Templates
- 25
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
Every house comes with a breaker panel whose labels are faded, wrong or missing, and the day a circuit trips is the day that matters. A label maker fixes that in an afternoon, then moves on to the storage bins in the basement, the spice jars, the cables behind the TV and the shut-off valves under the sinks. It sounds like a gift for an organizing enthusiast; for a new homeowner it's a tool.
Brother's PT-D220 is the plain desktop kind, which is easier to give than an app-based one: type on its full keyboard, check the label on the 15-character screen, press print. It has 25 built-in templates and takes Brother's TZe tapes up to about half an inch wide, the laminated kind that survive a damp garage. A sample tape is in the box.
The catches: it runs on six AAA batteries that aren't included, or an AC adapter sold separately, so put batteries in the gift bag. And tape is an ongoing cost; the sample roll goes fast once the labeling starts. Brother has retired the older PT-D210 that many lists still recommend; this is its current replacement.
Good
- Full keyboard and preview screen: no app to set up
- Laminated TZe tape holds up in garages and basements
- 25 built-in templates

- Needs six AAA batteries, not included
- Tape is an ongoing cost

6For the guy at the grill
ThermoWorks ThermoPop 2 Instant-Read Thermometer, Red
- Accuracy
- ±1°F from 14 to 208°F
- Range
- -58 to 572°F
- Response time
- 2-3 sec (4.5 in probe), 3-4 sec (8 in)
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
An instant-read thermometer is the kitchen tool that makes the biggest difference for the least money, and most home cooks still don't own a good one. It ends the cutting-into-the-chicken-to-check routine: push the probe into the thickest part, read the number, done. The ThermoPop 2 gives a reading in 2 to 3 seconds with the standard 4.5-inch probe and is accurate to within 1°F between 14 and 208°F, the range that covers meat, fish, bread and custards.
The round display is 1.26 inches across, lights up and turns itself to read the right way up in either hand, which matters at a dark grill. It's rated IP67 against splashes and rinsing, runs about 4,000 hours on one CR2032 coin battery, and turns off after 10 minutes. Each one comes with a NIST-traceable calibration certificate, so the number on the screen has been checked against a standard. There's one button and no menus.
The catches: it's a probe you hold, not one you leave in the oven with a cable, so it won't alarm when a roast hits temperature. ThermoWorks also sells it with an 8-inch probe for a little more (still under $50), which is better for a deep pot of oil or a large roast; check which length the listing is before you order. And it isn't listed as dishwasher safe: a rinse and wipe is the care.
Good
- Reading in 2 to 3 seconds
- Accurate to 1°F in the cooking range
- Display turns to face you in either hand
Worth knowing
- Handheld: no leave-in probe or alarm
- Check the probe length on the listing
- Rinse and wipe; not for the dishwasher
All specs

7For the backyard pitmaster
Meat Church The Holy Trinity BBQ Rub Set
- Rubs
- 3
- Holy Cow
- 12 oz, beef
- Honey Hog
- 12.5 oz, pork and poultry
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
Meat Church is a Texas barbecue company, and The Holy Trinity is its three best-known rubs in one set: Holy Cow, Honey Hog and The Gospel. That covers most of what comes off a backyard smoker or grill, which makes it a gift that gets used every weekend from spring to football season.
Each one has a job. Holy Cow is a Texas-style beef rub, mostly salt, spice and garlic, made for brisket, tri-tip and steak. Honey Hog is sweet, with honey powder and paprika, for ribs, pulled pork, chicken, fish and vegetables. The Gospel is the all-purpose one, a Southwestern-style blend for anything. Together that's 37 ounces of seasoning in shaker bottles, and Meat Church lists all of its rubs as gluten free with no MSG.
Know two things. Sugar is the first ingredient in Honey Hog and The Gospel, so they suit low-and-slow cooking better than a very hot grill, where sugar can scorch. And it gets used up: someone who smokes every weekend will want refills by spring, which is a good problem for next year's present.
Good
- Three rubs that cover beef, pork, chicken and vegetables
- 37 oz in all, in shaker bottles
- Gluten free with no MSG, per the maker
Worth knowing
- Two of the three are sweet rubs that can scorch on high heat
- Gets used up

8For the guy with a home state
Lodge American Road Trip 12 Inch Cast Iron Skillet, Texas
- Size
- 12 in
- Weight
- 7.9 lb
- Length with handle
- 18 in
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
A 12-inch cast iron skillet is the pan a cook reaches for most, big enough for four burgers, a whole batch of cornbread or a steak with room for the potatoes. Lodge's American Road Trip skillets are that standard pan with one change: the state is cast into the cooking surface. The Texas one shows the Alamo, Johnson Space Center, a cowboy boot and bluebonnets.
It's made in the USA and comes seasoned with vegetable oil, so it can go on the stove the day it's opened, and it works on any stovetop including induction, in the oven, on a grill or over a campfire. Lodge lists it at 7.9 pounds, 18 inches long with the handle and 2.25 inches deep, with a helper handle opposite the main one for lifting it full.
Check the list before you buy: Lodge makes the series for 18 states and Washington, D.C., not all 50, and we link the Texas skillet. If his state isn't there, Lodge's plain 12-inch skillet is the same pan without the art. Like all cast iron, it wants hand washing, drying and a thin coat of oil, and at almost 8 pounds it's a two-hand lift when full.
Good
- His state cast into the pan: a gift, not a kitchen errand
- Seasoned and ready to cook, made in the USA
- Stovetop, induction, oven, grill or campfire
Worth knowing
- 18 states and D.C. so far, not all 50
- 7.9 lb: heavy when full
- Hand wash and oil; no dishwasher
All specs
- Size12 in
- Weight7.9 lb
- Length with handle18 in

9For the guy who spices everything
Momofuku Chili Crunch (Original)
- Jar
- 5.5 oz (155 g)
- Chiles
- Puya, japones, de árbol
- Heat
- 3 of 5 (Momofuku's scale)
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
Chili crunch is chili oil with the good part left in: crisp bits of fried garlic and shallot, chili flakes and sesame seeds in a jar of oil. Momofuku's, developed by David Chang's company, uses three Mexican chiles (puya, japones and de árbol) in grapeseed oil, and a little coconut sugar and mushroom powder round it out. A spoonful goes on eggs, noodles, rice, pizza, dumplings and anything else that needs a bit of heat and crunch.
It's an easy stocking gift for a cook because it's a pantry upgrade most people won't buy for themselves, and the 5.5-ounce jar is short and squat enough to sit in the toe of a stocking. Momofuku puts the original at three out of five for heat on its own scale: warm, not punishing.
Two things to know before you buy it for someone. It contains sesame seeds, so skip it for anyone with a sesame allergy. And a jar is used up in weeks if they like it, so this is a treat, not a keepsake. For a milder palate, the maker's Mild Garlic version is the same idea with the heat dialed down.
Good
- Goes on almost anything savory
- Medium heat by the maker's own scale
- Small, squat jar fits a stocking
Worth knowing
- Contains sesame seeds
- Gone in weeks, not years
All specs
- Jar5.5 oz (155 g)

10For any coffee drinker
AeroPress Coffee Maker - Original
- Capacity
- 10 oz (1-2 cups)
- Brew and clean
- About 2 minutes
- Size
- 5.25 in tall x 4.2 in wide
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
The AeroPress is a plastic tube and plunger that sits on top of a mug. Coffee and hot water go in, steep briefly, and get pressed through a small paper filter into the cup. AeroPress describes it as part French press, part pour-over, part espresso: the body of a French press, the clean cup a paper filter gives, and the option of a short, strong concentrate to top up with water or milk. Brewing and cleaning take about two minutes, and the used grounds pop out in a puck.
It's the coffee gift here that suits the widest range of people. It's hard to get a bad cup from it, it makes one or two cups at a time (10 ounces), it's 5.25 inches tall, and it's dishwasher safe on the top rack, so it travels well and fits in any kitchen. AeroPress includes paper micro-filters, a scoop and a stirrer, so it works out of the box with a kettle and ground coffee.
The catches: it's built for one or two cups, so it's the wrong gift for a household that drinks a full pot. The strong concentrate is espresso-style, not espresso: there's no machine pressure and no crema. And it uses AeroPress's own small round filters, so they'll eventually need more, which makes a pack of filters an easy add-on.
Good
- Hard to get a bad cup
- Brew and clean in about two minutes
- Small and light enough to travel
Worth knowing
- One or two cups at a time
- Espresso-style, not espresso
- Uses its own round paper filters

11For the one still buying pre-ground
Hario Mini-Slim+ Ceramic Coffee Mill
- Burrs
- Ceramic, conical
- Capacity
- 24 g ground coffee
- Size
- 5.9 x 2.8 x 8.7 in (150 x 72 x 220 mm)
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
Ground coffee starts losing its aroma soon after it's ground, which is why coffee people grind right before they brew. For someone still buying pre-ground bags, a grinder changes the cup more than any brewer. The Mini-Slim+ is Hario's entry-level hand grinder: turn the crank on top, and ceramic conical burrs shave the beans into a clear container below.
Burrs are the reason to give a grinder like this instead of a cheap electric blade grinder. Blades smash beans into a mix of dust and chunks; burrs cut them to an even size, and an even size is what lets a brew taste balanced rather than both bitter and sour. The grind size adjusts, so it works for a French press, a pour-over or an AeroPress. Hario describes the + version as an upgrade on the original Mini-Slim, with a new handle and shaft coupling for better grip.
The catches: hand grinding takes effort, so it suits someone who makes one or two cups, not a pot for the house. The container holds 24 grams of ground coffee, about two cups' worth. And its body is mostly resin and plastic, made in China; Hario's steel-bodied grinders cost well over this budget.
Good
- Ceramic burrs give an even grind
- Adjusts for French press to pour-over
- Slim enough to travel
Worth knowing
- Hand-cranked: for a cup or two
- Holds 24 g, about two cups
- Uses the whole budget

12For the guy up before everyone else
Stanley Classic Legendary Bottle 1.1 qt, Hammertone Green
- Capacity
- 1.1 qt
- Keeps hot
- 24 hours
- Keeps iced
- 5 days
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
This is the green thermos a lot of people remember from a parent's truck or lunch box, and Stanley still makes it. The 1.1-quart size holds about four mugs of coffee. Stanley rates it to keep drinks hot for 24 hours, cold for 24 hours, and cold with ice for five days, thanks to double-wall vacuum insulation in recycled 18/8 stainless steel.
It's the gift for a guy whose day starts before anyone else's: a job site, a long commute, a duck blind, a Saturday at the kids' games. The insulated lid doubles as a cup, the twist-and-pour stopper lets him pour without taking the whole top off, and the side handle makes it easy to carry full. Stanley lists it as dishwasher safe, which not every insulated bottle is.
It's big. The bottle stands just over 14 inches tall and weighs 1.85 pounds empty, so it rides on the seat or in a bag, not in a cup holder. For someone who only drinks one cup on the way to work, an insulated travel mug is the better fit.
Good
- Rated to keep drinks hot for 24 hours
- Lid doubles as a cup
- Dishwasher safe, per Stanley
Worth knowing
- Too big for a car's cup holder
- 1.85 lb before it's filled
All specs

13For hot coffee at the trailhead
MSR PocketRocket 2 Stove
- Weight
- 2.6 oz (73 g)
- Boil time, 1 L
- 3.5 min (MSR IsoPro)
- Burn time
- About 60 min per 8 oz canister
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
The PocketRocket 2 is a tiny stove that screws onto the top of a gas canister. It weighs 2.6 ounces and folds to a little over three inches long, and MSR rates it to boil a liter of water in about three and a half minutes. That's coffee in the morning, dinner at night and hot water for a cold hand, from something that fits in a mug.
It's the gift we'd pick for most campers, because a fast stove is the upgrade people notice every single trip. MSR's numbers give a sense of the fuel: with its own 8-ounce IsoPro canister, the stove burns for about an hour and boils about 16 liters, which is a long weekend for two. The three pot supports fold out to hold a wide range of pots and fold away when packed.
Know two things before you wrap it. The fuel canister isn't part of the stove, so either add one or make sure your camper has some. And it has no built-in igniter; it's lit with a match or a lighter, which campers often prefer since there's one less part to fail. In strong wind, any stove this small needs shelter.
Good
- 2.6 oz, folds smaller than a mug
- Boils a liter in about 3.5 minutes, per MSR
- Fold-out supports fit a wide range of pots
Worth knowing
- Needs a fuel canister: add one
- No igniter; light it with a match or lighter

14For coffee and soup at camp
Snow Peak Ti-Single 450 Cup
- Capacity
- 15.2 fl oz (450 ml)
- Weight
- 2.4 oz (70 g)
- Size
- 3.3 in wide, 3.6 in tall
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
A titanium mug is the piece of camping gear that people use for a decade. Snow Peak's Ti-Single 450 holds 15.2 fluid ounces and weighs 2.4 ounces, and because it's a single wall of titanium it can sit straight on a stove or the edge of a fire to heat water, soup or a second coffee. The two handles fold flat against the side for packing.
It pairs naturally with the PocketRocket on this list, and the mug doubles as a small pot for one person. Snow Peak makes its titanium products in Tsubame-Sanjo, a Japanese town known for metalwork, and it's the kind of finish and fit that shows in the hand.
The catch is the physics of a single wall. Titanium heats fast and the rim gets hot when you cook in it, and with no insulation a drink cools quickly on a cold morning. A camper who wants coffee to stay hot for an hour needs an insulated mug instead; Snow Peak's double-wall version lists just under this guide's budget.
Good
- 2.4 oz titanium, made in Japan
- Goes straight on a stove or fire
- Handles fold flat for packing
Worth knowing
- Single wall: drinks cool quickly
- The rim gets hot when used as a pot

15For every small job at camp
Opinel No.08 Stainless Steel Folding Knife, Beech
- Blade length
- 3.28 in
- Overall length
- 7.59 in
- Weight
- 1.6 oz
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
The Opinel No.08 has been made since 1890, and it remains the simplest good knife a camper can own: a stainless blade, a beech handle and nothing else to break. At camp it slices salami and cheese, cuts cord, opens food bags and whittles a marshmallow stick, and it weighs 1.6 ounces.
The detail that makes it work is the Virobloc ring, a steel collar Opinel patented in 1955. Twist it one way and the blade is locked open, so it can't fold onto your fingers while you cut; twist it the other way and it's locked shut in a pocket. The blade is 3.28 inches long and stainless, so it shrugs off damp mornings, and Opinel sources the beech from managed woodlands in the French Alps and the Jura.
Two honest catches. Wood swells when it's wet, so a soaked Opinel can be stiff to open until it dries; it isn't a knife to leave in a puddle or put in a dishwasher. And it's a knife, so it lives in the camping bin or the car, not in a carry-on bag.
Good
- Locking ring holds the blade open or shut
- 1.6 oz, with a 3.28-inch stainless blade
- Simple: nothing to break
Worth knowing
- A wet wooden handle can stick until it dries
- Has a blade: not for a carry-on bag

16For light inside the tent
Black Diamond Moji+ Lantern, Black

- Weight
- 140 g (4.9 oz)
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
A headlamp is for walking; a lantern is for living in the tent. Black Diamond's Moji+ is a small round lantern that hangs from the loop in a tent's ceiling by its double hook and lights the whole space, so nobody is blinding anyone else with a headlamp while they find a sleeping bag. It puts out up to 200 lumens of white light, has a low setting that lasts for days, and has four magnets for sticking it to a car or a cooler.
It also has a full spectrum of colors and a flickering campfire mode, which sounds like a gimmick and turns out to be the setting families with kids use most. Black Diamond rates it at 5.5 hours on high and 100 hours on low, and it's IPX4, which means it shrugs off rain from any direction. It weighs 140 grams.
The catch is power. It runs on three AAA batteries that aren't included, or on Black Diamond's rechargeable BD 1500 battery, sold separately. Add a pack of AAAs to the gift. If they'd rather recharge over USB, Black Diamond's Moji R+ has a built-in battery, at a price just under this guide's budget.
Good
- Hangs from a tent loop and lights the whole tent
- 100 hours on low, per Black Diamond
- Campfire mode and colors; IPX4 against rain
Worth knowing
- Three AAA batteries, not included
- Not rechargeable without the separate BD 1500 battery

17For the guy who loses his keys
Apple AirTag (2nd generation), 1 pack
- Weight
- 0.42 oz (11.8 g)
- Size
- 1.26 in across, 0.31 in thick (31.9 x 8.0 mm)
- Water and dust
- IP67 (1 m for up to 30 minutes)
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
An AirTag is a coin-sized tracker that shows up in the Find My app on an iPhone. Put one on a key ring, in a backpack or in a checked bag, and the owner can see where it was last seen, make it play a sound, or walk toward it with arrows on the screen. It finds its way through other people's Apple devices nearby, so it can be located across town, not only within Bluetooth range.
The second generation, which Apple released this year, keeps the size and the coin battery of the first but adds a speaker Apple says is 50% louder and a Precision Finding range up to 1.5 times longer. That matters most for the most common case: keys somewhere in the house, under a cushion or in a coat pocket. The battery is a standard CR2032 that lasts more than a year, and the phone says when it's time to swap it.
This is the safest gift on the list for anyone with an iPhone, and the one most people won't buy for themselves. The catches are real, though. It needs an iPhone or iPad on iOS 26 or later, so it's no use to an Android owner. The longer Precision Finding range needs an iPhone 15 or later or an iPhone Air (not the 16e or 17e). And there's no hole for a key ring, so it needs a holder or a key ring, bought separately.
Good
- Finds keys inside the house and across town
- Louder speaker than the first generation
- Coin battery the owner replaces in seconds
Worth knowing
- iPhone or iPad only (iOS 26 or later)
- Needs a holder or key ring, sold separately
- Longest Precision Finding range needs an iPhone 15 or later

Tribit StormBox Mini+ Portable Bluetooth Speaker, Black

- 12 W (2 x 6 W)
- Water
- IPX7
- Battery
- Up to 12 hr (60% volume, lights off)
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
A small waterproof speaker gets used every day in a way a big one doesn't: in the bathroom, on the kitchen counter, on the desk, in a beach bag. The StormBox Mini+ is about the size of a large coffee mug, 4.7 inches tall and 3.6 inches across, and weighs 1.2 pounds. Inside are two 48 mm drivers and a passive radiator for bass, 12 watts in total, aimed in a full circle so it sounds the same from any side of a room.
It's rated IPX7, which means it can survive being dropped in water, so a shower or a pool deck is fine. Tribit rates the battery at 12 hours at 60% volume with the lights off, and it charges over USB-C in about 2.5 hours. Two of them pair into a stereo set, there's a built-in microphone for calls, and an AUX input for a device without Bluetooth. Tribit's app adds an equalizer with five presets.
Two honest caveats. Twelve watts fills a bedroom or a small patio, not a party in a backyard. And Tribit's own page gives different battery figures in different places (12 hours in the specs, 20 in a help answer), so we use the lower one, with lights off. The RGB lights look fun on a desk and use battery.
Good
- IPX7: safe in the shower or by the pool
- Sounds the same from every side
- Two pair into a stereo set
Worth knowing
- 12 W suits a room, not a backyard party
- Battery figure is with the lights off
- Tribit's page gives two battery figures

19For a first apartment or a pet watcher
Wyze Cam v4 2.5K Indoor/Outdoor Security Camera, White

- Field of view
- 115.9 degrees diagonal
- Weather
- IP65, indoor and outdoor
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
A small home camera is the gift for someone who has asked how the dog spends the day, just moved into a first apartment, or wants to see who is at the front door. The Wyze Cam v4 records 2560 by 1440 video (Wyze calls it 2.5K), sees about 116 degrees across the diagonal, and turns on a 72-lumen spotlight at night, so it records in color rather than the gray of most night cameras.
It's rated IP65, so it can sit outside under an eave as well as on a bookshelf. It talks both ways, so the owner can speak to whoever is at the door (or tell the dog to get off the couch), and it has a 99 dB siren. It works with Alexa and Google Assistant. For storage it takes a microSD card up to 256 GB, which records around the clock with no monthly fee.
This is the gift on the list that needs the most thought. A camera is personal: give one to someone who wants one, not as a surprise. It needs a wall outlet within reach of its 6-foot micro-USB cable, and it joins only a 2.4 GHz network (Wi-Fi 6 on that band works better at a distance, but needs a Wi-Fi 6 router). The microSD card isn't in the box. And Wyze's paid Cam Plus plan is what adds cloud clips and smarter alerts; the camera works without it, recording to the card.
Good
- Color video at night with its spotlight
- IP65: indoors or outside under cover
- Records to a microSD card with no monthly fee
Worth knowing
- microSD card not included
- Needs an outlet; 6 ft micro-USB cable
- Cloud recording is a paid Wyze plan

20For PC games played from the couch
8BitDo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller (PC), Mint
- Works with
- Windows 10+, Android 9+
- Sticks and triggers
- Hall effect
- Battery
- 19 hr (2.4 GHz), 32 hr (Bluetooth)
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
Plenty of PC games play better with a controller, from racing games to anything built for consoles first, and many PC players still use a worn-out one or none at all. The Ultimate 2C is an Xbox-layout wireless controller for Windows and Android at a price low enough to buy as a second one for a guest.
The headline is the Hall effect joysticks and triggers. They read position with magnets instead of parts that rub, which is why they resist stick drift, the slow wander that ruins older controllers. 8BitDo also added two extra bumpers (L4 and R4) that can be remapped without software, rumble, a turbo function and metal rings around the sticks to resist wear. It connects over a 2.4 GHz USB adapter or a cable to a PC at a 1,000 Hz polling rate, and over Bluetooth to an Android phone.
Compatibility is where to be careful. 8BitDo lists Windows 10 and later and Android 9 and later, nothing else: not Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, Mac or iPhone. The adapter is USB-A, so a laptop with only USB-C ports needs a dongle. And the battery is rated at 19 hours over the adapter (32 over Bluetooth), so it goes on the charger every few sessions.
Good
- Hall effect sticks and triggers resist drift
- Two extra remappable bumpers
- Seven colors, mint among them
Worth knowing
- Windows and Android only
- USB-A adapter
- 19 hours per charge over 2.4 GHz

A light wireless mouse is the gear change PC players feel most, because a heavy one tires the wrist and a cable drags. The Pulsefire Haste 2 Core Wireless weighs 70 grams with its battery in and connects through a 2.4 GHz USB dongle for games or Bluetooth for a laptop.
Its sensor goes up to 12,000 dpi with four presets (400, 800, 1600 and 3200) and reports 1,000 times a second, the same polling rate as far more expensive mice. The main buttons use TTC Gold switches rated for 20 million clicks, there are six buttons in all, and HyperX's NGENUITY software remaps them and sets the RGB lighting. What sets it apart on a gift list is that HyperX lists it as compatible with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5 and PS4 as well as PC, which helps for the games on those consoles that take a mouse.
The catches: it runs on one AAA battery, rated up to 100 hours over the dongle, rather than a rechargeable cell, and the box lists only the mouse and a quick-start guide, so put a AAA battery in with the gift. HyperX calls this the economical alternative to the Haste 2; the regular Haste 2 Wireless lists well above this budget.

Masters of Doom by David Kushner (Paperback)

Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
Masters of Doom is the story of John Carmack and John Romero, the two founders of id Software, and the games that made them: Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake. David Kushner, a journalist who has covered games for Rolling Stone and Wired, follows them from rough childhoods to a small Texas company that changed what PC games could be, and then to the falling-out that split them.
It's the classic gift for someone who remembers installing shareware from a floppy disk, and it works just as well for a younger player who knows Doom only as the game that runs on everything. It's a business story and a friendship story as much as a games story, which is why people who don't play much get through it too. At 368 pages it's a proper read, not a coffee-table book.
The caveats: it came out in 2004, so it ends long before the modern Doom games and the later careers of both men. And it doesn't skip the uncomfortable parts, including the arguments over violence in games at the time.
Good
- A business story and a friendship story
- Works for non-gamers in the family too
- Long enough to last a holiday break

- Published 2004: stops before modern Doom
- Covers the violence debates of the era

23For seat-back screens and the gym

- Battery

- Plugs into
- 3.5 mm headphone jack
- Connects
- 1 pair of Bluetooth headphones
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
The AirFly SE solves one specific, common annoyance: wireless earbuds don't work with a plane's seat-back screen, a treadmill or an old stereo, because those only have a headphone jack. The AirFly is a small transmitter that plugs into that jack and sends the sound to one pair of Bluetooth headphones, AirPods included. There's no app; you pair it once with its button.
It's the right gift for a guy who travels for work, watches a movie on every flight, or uses the cardio machines at the gym with a pair of earbuds he can't plug in. It weighs 15.3 grams, has its own volume buttons and runs for 20 hours or more on a charge, which covers a long-haul flight there and back. A USB-C to USB-A charging cable comes in the box.
Two limits. It connects one pair of headphones; to share a movie with someone in the next seat, Twelve South's AirFly Pro handles two. And some planes still use a two-pronged headphone socket, and there's no adapter for that in the box, so add one if he flies older aircraft.
Good
- Earbuds work with seat-back screens and gym machines

- Noise reduction
- Up to 24 dB (SNR)

- Silicone
- Ear tips
- XS, S, M, L
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
Foam earplugs work, but they're disposable, they fall out and most people find them uncomfortable after a few hours. Loop's Quiet 2 are soft silicone earplugs you wash and reuse, with a small ring on each one that makes them easy to pull out and hard to lose in the sheets. Loop rates them at up to 24 decibels of noise reduction (SNR), enough to soften traffic, a neighbor's TV or the hum of a plane cabin.
The box includes four sizes of ear tips, XS through L, so they fit a wide range of ears, and a small carry case. They're one of the least expensive gifts here, which makes them a good add-on to any of the others or a stocking stuffer for someone who travels often.
The limits: 24 dB takes the edge off noise; it doesn't make a room silent, and a loud snorer will still be heard. Side sleepers may feel the ring against the pillow. And the right fit takes a night or two of trying the tip sizes.
Good
- Soft, reusable silicone

- Lenses
- Blue mirrored, scratch-resistant
Paid link. We may earn a commission; your price is the same.
Regular sunglasses bounce on a runner's nose and slide down when they sweat, which is why so many runners squint instead. goodr builds its sunglasses for running: the frames have a grip coating so they don't slip or bounce, and they're made of a light polymer meant to be worn all day. The OG is goodr's classic square-ish shape, the one most runners picture.
The lenses are UV400, blocking 100% of UVA and UVB light, and the blue mirrored finish cuts bright light and glare. goodr describes the lenses as scratch-resistant and built to survive everyday knocks. They also come in dozens of colors with silly names; Iced By Yetis is white frames with blue lenses.
The catches: the OG is one frame size, goodr's medium fit, so for someone with a small or large face goodr's other shapes may fit better. They aren't prescription sunglasses. And goodr offers more than one lens type in some frames, so check the lens type on the listing before you order.

How we chose
Every gift lists under $50 at its maker's own price, and every gift had to pass one test: would he use it every week, or at least every trip, once he has it. That rules out novelty gifts that are funny on Christmas morning and live in a drawer by February, and anything that needs his size, like clothes and shoes, which are easy to get wrong.
Every product here first earned a place in one of our narrower guides, where it was compared with the products around it: gifts for dad, tech gifts, kitchen gifts, coffee gifts, gifts for gamers, gifts for runners, gifts for new homeowners and stocking stuffers. Those guides explain the choices in more depth.
Put these in the box too
Six of these gifts need something that isn't included. Add it to the gift, so nothing sits unused on Christmas Day:
- MSR PocketRocket 2: a screw-on gas canister, such as MSR's own IsoPro.
- Black Diamond Moji+: three AAA batteries.
- Brother P-touch D220: six AAA batteries, and a spare roll of TZe tape if he'll label a lot.
- HyperX Pulsefire Haste 2 Core: one AAA battery.
- Apple AirTag: a key ring holder or a loop, since the AirTag has no hole of its own.
- Wyze Cam v4: a microSD card, up to 256 GB, for recording without a subscription.
If he already has half of these
Go one step sideways rather than buying a second of something. A man with a good multi-tool may not own a headlamp or a label maker; a man with a coffee maker may still buy pre-ground coffee, which makes the grinder the bigger change. Consumables are the other safe answer: the barbecue rubs and the chili crunch get used up, so a second set is never a duplicate.
What we left out, and why
- Eagle Creek's compression packing cubes: a strong travel gift, but the set's list price sits right on the budget line rather than under $50. It's in our travel guide.
- Wireless earbuds and smartwatches from the big brands: the ones worth giving list well over this budget.
- Gag gifts: funny for a minute, then a drawer.
- Clothes and shoes: they need his size and his taste, and a wrong guess is easy to make.
Watch: the 15-minute version

What do you get a guy who says he doesn't want anything?
Something he'd use every week but won't buy for himself: a multi-tool with spring-loaded pliers, an instant-read thermometer, a hand coffee grinder or a tracker for his keys. Consumables such as barbecue rubs are a safe choice too, because they get used up.

For most men, the Leatherman Wingman or the ThermoPop 2 thermometer: both solve a job he does all the time. If he has an iPhone, an Apple AirTag for his keys is the easiest gift on this list to get right.
Which of these gifts need batteries or extras?
The MSR stove needs a fuel canister, the Black Diamond lantern three AAA batteries, the Brother label maker six AAA batteries, the HyperX mouse one AAA battery, the AirTag a key ring holder and the Wyze camera a microSD card. Everything else works out of the box.
